JORDAN – The King’s Highway

Day 1 – Saturday 13th May 2017
Fly London to Amman with Royal Jordanian and on arrival check in to the Days Inn Hotel Amman for two nights on room and breakfast basis.

Day 2 – Jerash
With visits to the new Jordan Museum with its beautifully designed galleries, the Citadel and the Roman Theatre cut into the side of a mountain.  We have lunch at a local restaurant and then travel to the atmospheric ruins of Jerash, one of the most important and best preserved Roman cities in the Near East.  The site was inhabited for nearly  five thousand years and we visit all the main elements  including the  Hippodrome, the Temple of Zues, the Theatre, Fountain and Baths. Day 3 – The Dead Sea
We stop at the city of Madaba the ‘City of Mosaics’ renowned for fine Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics. The most famous treasure is the 6th Century AD map showing  the major biblical sites from Egypt to Palestine. Then to Mt Nebo where Moses looked over the Jordan River towards Palestine and across the Sinai towards the Promised Land. This afternoon we check in to the Jordan Valley Marriott Resort and Spa on the shores of the Dead Sea. (B)

Day 4 – Kerak Castle
Time to enjoy the Dead Sea this morning perhaps taking a swim in this amazing landscape. At 400 metres below sea level this is the lowest point on earth.  Later we visit the Crusader stronghold of Kerak and visit the fortified castle built in 1142. The castle dominates the hilltop and we investigate the ramparts and defences of this castle that was once home to Raymond de Chatillon. We continue to Petra and on arrival we check in to the  Movenpick Resort  for three nights on room and breakfast basis. (B)

Day 5 – Into Petra
We begin our day with one of the most stunning archaeological experiences, walking the Siq into the legendary city of Petra. This long narrow chasm leads in to Petra, and we will see the magnificent Treasury through a giant fissure in the rock. We start at the Treasury, Royal Tombs and the Theatre.  We have lunch amidst the ruins and those who wish can join us and ascend the long staircase up to the Monastery, el Deir. Five minutes further and you reach ‘the view at the end of the world’. Alternatively, take more time to wander the city itself. (BL)

Day 6 – Petra
We once again walk through the Siq into Petra, the Rose Red City and then we climb to the High Place of Sacrifice. In the distance we see Aaron’s Tomb and the mountains beyond. We descend in to the Wadi Farasa and the most beautiful colour sandstone formations to be found in Petra. We see the Garden Tomb and the Roman Soldier Tomb before having a break for refreshments. Free time this afternoon in Petra or back at the hotel. (B)

Day 7 – The Seven Pillars of Wisdom
This morning we visit the  Crusader castle of Shobak built on a remote hill before we drive through the al-Heeshah Mountains to Little Petra hidden in a peaceful valley and the Neolithic Village of Beidha.  Then we head south to Wadi Rum where we have a Bedouin jeep ride to look at many famous sites including Lawrence’s Well, The Bridges, the rock art at Khazali and the Seven Pillars of Wisdom. We continue to Aqaba where we check in to the Movenpick Resort for two nights on room and breakfast basis. (B)

Day 8 – Pharaoh’s Island
This morning we take a day cruise in the Gulf of Aqaba to Pharaoh’s Island to view the citadel built by Crusaders defending the route between Cairo and Damascus. We have a tour of the Fort, lunch on board, a chance to swim and then return to our hotel. (B)

Day 9 – Sunday 21st May 2017
We take our private transfer to Aqaba airport and fly to London via Amman arriving late afternoon. (B)
