IMPERIAL MOROCCO
 
Morocco is fast becoming a favourite with AWT passengers and this city tour allows the chance to learn more about this fascinating, colourful and exotic land. Escorted throughout by AWT tour manager Janet Shepherd you will visit bustling Royal Cities, ancient Roman sites, travel through wonderful scenery and be amazed by this vibrant North West African country.
 
Day 1 –  Friday 24th March 2017
Fly to Marrakech with British Airways and on arrival we take our private transfer and check in to the Meridien Hotel for two nights on room and breakfast basis.

Day 2  –  Marrakech
This morning we visit the ruined El Badi Palace dating from the sixteenth century with time to climb the ramparts allowing for great views across the city. Next, to the Saadian Tombs, hidden away by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the early 1600s only to be discovered by a French aerial survey in 1917. On to the lovely Bahia Palace built in the 1860s, where we see beautiful stucco work, painted wooden ceilings and amazing tilework. Our last stop will be Maison Tiskiwin which houses a private collection of Moroccan and Saharan artefacts. We have lunch and then free time to either stay and wander the souk of return to the hotel  to enjoy the gardens and swimming pool. (BL)

Day 3 – Casablanca
We travel to Casablanca, the largest city in Morocco and enjoy a city tour with some free time before continuing along the coast road towards Rabat the capital of Morocco. On arrival we check in to the five star Amphitrite Hotel in a beautiful setting on the Atlantic Coast for two nights on half board basis. (BD)

Day 4 – Sala Colonia
Today we visit the Chellah Necropolis, Sala Colonia being the ancient Roman colony dating to the Emperor Claudius. Here we see Roman masonry and Islamic period architecture side by side. Further north we visit Thamusida on the banks of Wadi Sebou where we see the remains of  Roman walls, the army camp and  the Roman baths in a site occupied from the 2nd Century BC for five hundred years. Our day will end with a sightseeing tour of Rabat City, with the medina listed as a World Heritage site. (BD)

Day 5  – Magnificent Lixus
We drive north along the Atlantic coast road to the fascinating and peaceful city of Lixus believed by the ancients to be the Garden of Hesperides and first settled by the Phoenicians in the 7th Century BC. We can see industrial-scale tanneries, an amphitheatre and acropolis walls. We  also stop at the Neolithic stone circle at M’Soura to view the monolithic standing stones believed to be surrounding a burial area of about 55 metres in circumference. This stone circle is unique in the Maghreb and the Sahara and likened to those found in Spain. We head inland to the Imperial City of Meknes where we overnight at the majestic Hotel Tafilalaet on half board basis. (BD)

Day 6 – Volubilis
Straight to Morocco’s most celebrated Roman site, Volubilis, set in a vast fertile plain the location is stunning. We wander through the city looking at the  houses of the affluent with their wonderful mosaics, wonder at the triumphal Arch of Caracalla and walk the Decumanus  Maximus. Time for coffee before we head back to Meknes for a lunch and a tour of the grand Moorish buildings to be found in the city. During the afternoon we visit Dar el-Ma  and Heri es-Souani being the Water House and  the Grainstore Stables. We walk round the ramparts and see the gateway of Dar el-Makhzen. We then move on to  Fez the oldest of Morocco’s Imperial cities and  a World Heritage Site of UNESCO.  We check in to the first class Palais Ommeyad Hotel on half board basis. (BLD)

Day 7 – Imperial Fez
This morning we have a city tour allowing time to view the historic medina with its ramparts, minarets and domes. We see the historic Tanneries of Fez and admire the ongoing preservation work saving the city of Fez el-Bali. After our tour we take the road to  Marrakech. We stop for lunch  en route and on arrival check in to the Meridian Hotel on room and breakfast basis for our last two nights in Morocco. (BL)

Day 8  – Marrakech
Today is a free day to enjoy the delights of the city. Stroll to Menara Garden visit the Majorelle Gardens of  Yves St Laurent or take a walk to the hectic Jemaa el Fna  for some quality shopping time and street entertainment. Alternatively simply relax by the pool at our comfortable hotel. (B)

Day 9 – Saturday 1st April 2017
We take our private transfer to Marrakech airport for our flight to London. (B)
