ASWAN The Southern City

Day 1 – Monday 16th March 2015
Fly London to Luxor with EgyptAir and on arrival take our private transfer to the first-class Old Winter Palace, Garden Pavilion Wing, for one night on room and breakfast basis.

Day 2 –The Road South
Our journey begins as we head to Aswan. First we venture in to the Eastern Desert along the Wadi Barramiya road to stop at Kanais. Here we find the small rock-cut temple of Seti I, and the Roman guard post. We have arranged special entry to this colourful little temple. Also a chance to view some ancient rock art on the cliff face nearby. We have picnic lunch boxes provided by the Old Winter Palace before continuing to Edfu where we enter the Temple of Horus. On arrival in Aswan we check in to the comfortable Movenpick Hotel on Elephantine Island for six nights on room and breakfast basis. (BL)

Day 3 – Island of Isis
We begin with a visit to the quarry site of the Unfinished Obelisk in its Open-Air Museum. This is the site that supplied the granite for the temples and colossi of the Ancient Egyptians. Then we take a motor boat to the Temple of Philae in its beautiful setting on Aglika Island. We enter the Temple of Isis, the smaller Temple of Hathor, see Hadrian’s Gate and the Kiosk of Trajan. We return to the hotel for some free time before an afternoon visit to Kubbet el Hawa. Here we can enter the tombs of Nobles dating from the Old and Middle Kingdoms including those of Harkhuf, Sirenput and Pepi-Nakht. (B)

Day 4 – Kom Ombo
A rare treat today as we drive to the Temple of Haroeris and Sobek at Kom Ombo, beautifully situated right on a bend of the River Nile. We have plenty of time to enjoy a guided tour and wander at will around the site looking at the lovely reliefs. Time for a drink at the local café before driving back to our hotel. This evening we have a guided tour of the Nubia Museum displaying artefacts from prehistory through to Coptic and Islamic eras. (B)

Day 5 – River Life
Once again we take a boat and this time we head for Sehel Island. Here we find over 250 inscriptions, some dating from the Middle Kingdom, and most famous of all, the Famine Stele. There is also a wonderful view over the First Cataract. Next, to the West Bank for a walk to the Monastery of St Simeon. We spend some time looking at birdlife on the smaller islands before returning to our hotel for a rest at lunch time.  Later we have a guided tour of the vast ruins of ancient Yebu on Elephantine Island. Here we view the Temples of Khnum, Hequaib and Satet along with the famous Nileometer and remains of ancient houses. (B)

Day 6 – Optional Abu Simbel
A chance to take the optional air excursion to view the great Sun Temple of Abu Simbel, on the west bank of Lake Nasser. A free morning for those who do not book the excursion. This afternoon our guide takes us for a walk around the town. We look at the unusual relief of sculptors Bek and Men standing before a statue of Amenhotep III, the great Cathedral and a little known Temple of Isis on the edge of the town. This small temple built during the time of the Ptolemies is beneath the present day street level and closed to the public but we can look over the railings and see carvings on the door-jambs and lintels. (B)

Day 7– Lake Nasser
After breakfast we drive to the rarely visited site of New Kalabsha saved from the rising waters of Lake Nasser in the 1970s. Nearby, we find the Kiosk of Qertassi and the remains of Gerf Hussain. Time to admire the stunning views over Lake Nasser. Beit el Wali, with its fascinating wall reliefs is also within easy walking distance. We return to our hotel by lunchtime. Free time this afternoon to enjoy the facilities of our hotel or head to the bazaar for last minute shopping. (B)
